A patio is defined as an inner court open to the sky. Therefore it is an extension of the house and as such, it is in keeping with the house’s architectural style.
The patio is ideal for informal and even leisurely entertaining. Surrounded by a garden, it provides a respite for the homemaker in a sheltered solitude, especially after a hard day’s work.
If you don’t have a patio yet, here are some pointers on how to create one:
1. Your patio must not only be pleasing to the eyes but also comfortable to be in. It must be positioned in such a way that air can freely circulate.
2. Flooring materials must need little maintenance. Pebbled flooring or one that is covered with clay or tiles or pebbled finish is better than wood parquet.
3. Patio furniture must be easy to maintain and strong enough to withstand harmful effects of the elements. Metal and plastic may be good materials since they can be left there all the time, rain or shine. Wicker furniture would be fine since it’s alright to be wet from time to time; in fact it needs water for longer-lasting flexibility. But for the seats or cushions, the materials must be able to repel water or sunshine without fading or deteriorating too fast.
4. The garden must have tall trees to provide shade. Potted plants, climbers and shrubs will provide a soothing atmosphere. Decorate the garden with outdoor ceramics, earthen jars, etc.
5. For a cool ambience, install waterfalls or fountain at a corner.
6. Leave enough vacant space at the center for games like children’s sandpits or adults’ table tennis.
7. Barbecue facilities would be very useful for outdoor dining.
8. A swimming pool, if the space permits, is a desirable extension of the patio.
